Day THREE (PART 1) – 4D3N Coron Adventure – MALCAPUYA LOOP

Our itinerary for day 3 was so packed I could hardly wait for it to start.
We asked TOTO to meet us at LAMBINGAN BRIDGE.
Careful with the bridge… watch your steps!!! You would not want to fall off that bridge..believe me!
It was about 7am when we started our tour and the view was just perfect!
That’s the CORON ala HOLLYWOOD sign on the left and MOUNT TAPYAS on the right.
 Mt. Tapyas

CORON Hollywood sign
By the way, here is a price list of boat rentals just for comparison. It was posted near CORON PUBLIC MARKET.

For the first half of today’s trip, our itinerary was to visit the MALCAPUYA LOOP.
Toto charged us Php 3,000 for MALCAPUYA LOOP Tour, which included MALCAPUYA ISLAND, glimpse of BANANA ISLAND, DITAYTAYAN (sandbar) ISLAND and BULOG ISLAND.

It took us about 1.5-2 hours to reach MALCAPUYA but it was a super relaxing trip. The sea was calm so we had a really smooth ride :)
Perfect white beach of MALCAPUYA ISLAND
We were charged Php 150 each as entrance fee.
You have to make the most of the entrance fees because in reality, you don’t get to spend a lot of time on each island. Before you know it, you’re already spending a lot of money for the whole trip and your wallet is beginning to get thinner and thinner :p
That’s the only resort in Malcapuya at the back.
I wouldn’t recommend staying here because the island is very far and there is not much to see or do here. I would definitely recommend staying in CORON TOWN PROPER if you would like to go to different restaurants every night.
But if you really want to stay at a beach resort, then CLUB PARADISE would be the best!
We stayed in Malcapuya for less than an hour because we still have to go to other islands.
As you go from one island to another, fishes jumping out of the water would be an ordinary sight.
Some even catch fresh tuna :)

That’s BANANA ISLAND but Toto said that we can skip it since it is very similar to MALCAPUYA and that MALCAPUYA had a nicer beach than this one.

Next was the long sandbar of DITAYTAYAN ISLAND (Php 150/pax)

We didn’t want to leave the island because it was just perfect!!!! But Toto knew better!! He had to remind us that there’s still more and that he will bring us to a better island, which was initially not in our itinerary.

Below is BULOG ISLAND. There are 2 BULOG islands.. BULOG 1 and BULOG 2.
Toto said that WALING WALING Resort in Boracay was able to buy the island and is now being developed that’s why the entrance fee was Php 200
He was not sure though if it was really WALING WALING but definitely a resort in Boracay. Entrance fee will go higher by the following months as the development progress.
He mentioned that BORACAY RESORT OWNERS are already negotiating on buying the other available islands in Coron. I am not so sure if this was a good idea :(
I truly hope Coron won’t be over-developed and commercialized as Boracay.
 BULOG 1 seemed like a never-ending sandbar.
The sand was just so soft and white!!!
I am not sure if the sandbar connects BULOG 1 and 2.
I did not pay much attention at that time :p
Because everyone was just so busy exploring the beauty of BULOG
The water was so clear and there’s also a great spot for snorkeling
  BULOG was perfect!!!!
It was the BEST BEACH in Coron!!!!

and now… we’re off to lunch!
Toto decided to bring us to BANOL BEACH for lunch and that was where the part two of our trip starts…

Day TWO – 4D3N Coron Adventure – Dive/Snorkel/Swim with the Dugongs

Day TWO was scheduled for  a whole day affair with the dugongs.
We were deciding on either spending it at Calauit Safari with Culion Island Tour or SNORKEL WITH THE DUGONGS.

We did our research and most of the people we’ve talked to discouraged us from spending the day at Calauit Safari, mainly because there were very few animals left.
That was really a bummer because I was really looking forward to the CALAUIT SAFARI TOUR.
If ever you wish to go there, you should stay in Club Paradise or El Rio Y Mar Resort, which are the closest resorts to Calauit Safari.

Locals say that the animals are only out early in the morning and will be hiding by noontime.
So if you want to get up close and personal with a giraffe, be there by 6am.

The group had decided to SWIM WITH THE DUGONGS for our DAY TWO CORON ADVENTURE TRIP.

JJ, the driver, picked us up from the guesthouse and drove us all the way to MARICABAN VILLAGE, where we met the staffs of DUGONG DIVE CENTER.
The drive was about an hour to go there. JJ charged us Php 3,000 for the roundtrip.

On our way to MARICABAN VILLAGE, we drove thru the biggest ranch in Asia again, the YULO-KING RANCH. It’s about 30,000 hectares of land and was previously owned by the MARCOSes.
BIG thanks to the Marcoses for developing Coron.
They were responsible for importing the animals from Africa to Calauit. (I just wish the government will take better care of the animals).
The Marcoses also imported AUSTRALIAN grass for the WHOLE YULO-KING RANCH!!!! Yes, all 30,000 hectares of it is covered with AUSTRALIAN GRASS.
So that’s why you feel like you’re in another country while passing the ranch!
“YUMMMEEE,” said the cattle

From Maricaban Village was another 1.5 to 2 hours by boat going to CLUB PARADISE.
Why did we go there? Because that is where the office of DUGONG DIVE CENTER is!!!

Beside the office is a display of the GIANT CLAM.

We’re so lucky to be able to go to CLUB PARADISE because it is literally a CLUB PARADISE.
That’s JJ, our van driver, guy on the left wearing a brown T-shirt. He went with us in our DUGONG ADVENTURE. It’s his first time too!!! And he got in for FREE!

Fruit bats are plentiful in CLUB PARADISE. Don’t freak out. They’re harmless.

OMAR LINSANGAN, our guide, told us that if you want to swim around the CLUB PARADISE island, the resort charges Php 500/pax entrance fee. That’s the most expensive entrance fee in Coron, but it’s worth every cent!
This is OMAR LINSANGAN, an awesome underwater photographer!!
He is the brother of AL LINSANGAN, a professional photographer, who also operates Coron tours.
Omar’s underwater shots were jaw-dropping!!!
You should ask for his album when you meet him.

After signing our waivers and paying the fee of Php 2,700/ pax for the DUGONG WATCHING, Omar prepared our gears which we will be using for the day trip.
We’re already late so we were just given CDs for us to watch as introduction :)

Before all these, we were warned that Dugongs are easily distracted with the noise and tend to swim away when they see boats or divers, so we have to be really quiet and calm on water.
Also, it would be possible for us NOT TO SPOT any dugong for the day.
So we’re all hoping for the best!
Our boat was huge! This was where we hanged out while looking for Dugongs, and at the middle was a “changing room” where we can change clothes. There was also a covered toilet room. Yes, there was a toilet bowl too!!!
On the other end of the boat was a big table and a stove.
That’s KAREN CLAIRE, our boat, together with MINI KAREN CLAIRE, which was also riding the boat :)
Also, a small motor boat was in tow, which we used when we snorkeled around the islands.

Okay, we love this boat, really!
It made island hopping and dugong watching so relaxed and fascinating.
It even has its own double deck for a more comfortable trip. Yes!!! It’s like travelling FIRST CLASS :p
Mattresses were available for sunbathing on the side of the boat too :)
Awesome right?

Enough with the boat…

Time to focus on the trip now.

We stopped by this island for a few minutes to check if there was a dugong in the area. Dugongs usually come up the water to breathe every 5-8 minutes so it’s hard not to spot any if there is one in the area.
After many many minutes, we still had no luck in spotting one.

Off to the next feeding ground…

Still no luck :(
We had lunch at our beautiful boat and snorkeled our sadness away.

It seems that Coron has no unpleasant sites. Everywhere we go was just breathtaking.
I loved the blue corals and blue starfishes :)
I am glad I was able to visit Coron while it is not yet commercialized like Boracay.
While waiting for the Dugongs, three sea turtles decided to swim with us. We weren’t able to snap a photo of the first turtle though, because it was in a hurry.
I think maybe it’s a sign!
Our next destination was along the Calauit Island.

THERE IT IS!!!

The dugongs were traveling as a family! There were three of them when we reached the island.

We hurriedly put on our gears and swam as quietly as possible.
Unfortunately, the dugongs swam away :(

That was our one and only snapshot of a real dugong during our adventure.
Oh well! At least we got to see them.
Here are some pictures of DUGONGS grabbed from the internet:

Dugongs are harmless, endangered species and are protected by the people of Coron.
Some hunt them for their meat, which is awful because that’s the reason why Dugongs tend to swim away when they see boats coming.

It’s so sad to know that there are still fishermen out there hunting for them :(
“Dugongs bear one calf at a time after an approximately 13-month gestation. The calf nurses for two years and reaches sexual maturity between the ages of 8-18, longer than in most other mammals. Despite the longevity of the Dugong, which may live for fifty years or more, females give birth only a few times during their life and invest considerable parental care in their young.” – WIKIPEDIA
Let’s all help keep Busuanga clean, green and a safe place for all living things.

Day ONE – 4D3N Coron Adventure – Calumboyan Island Tour

We were about to book at CORON GATEWAY HOTEL when my friend’s cousin offered us their “guest house.” LUCKY US!!!! hehehe

We arrived Busuanga Airport at 10:30am and was picked up by JJ to drive us to the guesthouse. (Php 150/pax)
JJ was kind enough to drive by “Chooks to Go”  so we can buy 2 whole chickens to bring with us for our island hopping.
It was June and the weather forecast said there will be thunderstorms. The gray clouds got us a bit worried.

After about a few minutes, the sky started to clear and this lifted our spirits! yey!
Goodbye airport…
HELLO, CORON!!!
Notice their eggs? Coron eggs have smiley faces!!! hehehe

From the guesthouse, we rode a trike going to the pier near Coron Gateway Hotel.
The tricycle drivers normally charge Php 8/pax for a ride :)
4 people can fit at the back, 2 in front and 1 behind the driver.

Toto, our boatman, met us at the docking station.
(Contact numbers/details at the bottom. FYI: SUN Cellular does not work in Coron. NO SIGNAL FOR SUN SUBSCRIBERS as of JUNE 2010)
All 6 of us were comfortable with the boat so I guess, it’s okay :)
Toto charged us Php 3,500 for this day’s tour because we will be touring the CALUMBOYAN ISLANDS.
That’s TOTO, our Coron Boatman, looking cool as ever. On the right is the boat’s “COMFORT ROOM”

We reached Calumboyan Island after about 1.5 hours and this was where we had our lunch.
Picnic tables were available on the island.
Entrance fee was Php 150/pax
Please do not leave anything on the island, even your trash should be brought back to the boat.
Calumboyan Island was wonderful! The water was so clear that you can actually see the corals while you’re still on the boat. Be careful when snorkeling here as there were lots of sea urchins. If you have flippers, use them! Aqua shoes is highly recommended. Some of us also used ordinary trekking sandals and Crocs.

Here are some underwater photos of Calumboyan Island:

Please refrain from touching the corals. These are delicate creatures and let’s help protect them.

Most of the fishes were hidden at the bottom of the deeper water.
So mostly, you will just see corals here…

…But the corals were just amazing!!! Different shapes, different colors, different sizes!

The blue corals really stood out among all the corals in the island.

We didn’t spend too much time at Calumboyan because Toto said that there’s more in our next destination, CORAL GARDEN. If there is someone on duty, entrance fee to CORAL GARDEN would be Php 50/pax. Otherwise, it’s free.

It was like literally being inside a huge aquarium..WOW!

Don’t forget to bring BREAD! Feed them under water and be amazed!

We didn’t want to leave CORAL GARDEN but we have to move on.

The water was so clear and full of colorful fishes!!!

And now, we’re off to LUSONG GUNBOAT. Same with Coral Garden, a fee of Php 50/pax is required if there’s a guard on duty, otherwise, it’s free.

Just beware when stepping on the ship wreck or when touching it because of the rust. Always wear aqua shoes or any feet protection.

Our first day in Coron was just AMAZING!
We can’t wait for DAY 2 :)
The CALUMBOYAN ISLAND TOUR was perfect for our DAY ONE CORON ADVENTURE.

On our way back, we saw these holes on the island
At first, we thought these were caves of some sort but Toto said these were canyon blasts from the war.

Okay, now, what to do next?
Instead of being dropped off at the docking station near Coron Gateway Hotel, we asked Toto to drop us off to LAMBINGAN BRIDGE because the guesthouse was closer to that area.
Just a warning: LAMBINGAN BRIDGE is not a stable bridge! If you’re not comfortable in walking on swaying wooden planks, then don’t bother going there.

We still had plenty of time to go to MOUNT TAPYAS or MAQUINIT HOTSPRING but we decided not to go anymore. Roundtrip trike to each place would cost you about Php 300 per trike. These, like most places in Coron, are open till 10pm.

We had dinner at the guesthouse and were craving for dessert and WIFI so we decided to go to SEADIVE RESORT.
The tricycle driver will drop you off in front of a really small street. This will lead you to SEADIVE RESORT.

THERE’S FREE WIFI IN SEADIVE RESORT!!!
My friends were raving about their LECHE FLAN :) so I guess it’s good :)
Perfect way to end our day!

BEWARE OF THESE TOURIST SCAMMERS in MANILA

I got this from CARLOS CELDRAN’s FACEBOOK POST and I am just re-posting it to share with you guys.

PLEASE BEWARE of these Manila Tourist Scammers and BE VIGILANT!!!

“CARLOS CELDRAN is asking you to post this photo on Trip Advisor and other travel sites. A British national sent this photo saying that these people (a third guy stepped out of the shot) are scammers who drug tourists and take their money. Be vigilant.” – Carlos Celdran

Apparently, they are part of a big group operating this kind of modus operandi, which is “Befriending. Inviting out for drinks. Sticking Ativan in the drink. Taking all valuables and leaving them by the roadside.” (as stated by Carlos Cedran in his FB comment)

Kogi Bulgogi, Eastwood Mall

Mini-reunion with Noell and Analynne at KOGI BULGOGI, Eastwood Mall.

SALMON CARPACCIO (Php 248)

This was good but it would be better if the salmon sashimi were sliced more thinly and if they’re submerged in the ponzu sauce with alfalfa sprouts… mmmmmm.. reminiscing  SUSHI KUSHI!!!

YU KAE / YUK HOI (Php 238)
“Raw beef strips with raw egg, dashed with soy sauce mixed with Asian Pear”

This one sucked big time!!!! I am a fan of yu kae but KOGI’s version was very very disappointing!

It lacked the main ingredient — SESAME OIL!!!

BULGOGI (Php 248)

I wish it was less oily :) But the flavor was good.

SAM GYUP SAL / GRILLED PORK BELLY STRIPS (Php 218)
I wish they cooked it a little bit longer because I like my Sam Gyup Sal a little bit toasted on the side before dipping it in the sauces and wrapping it with the leafy greens.

WOOSOL GUI / GRILLED US BEEF TONGUE (Php 248)

yummmmmmeeeee… this one reminds me so much of Sushi Kushi’s GYU TAN

CHAP CHAE (Php 168)
This was okay :) I liked my cousin Tiffany’s version more though :)

We ended our dinner with KOREAN ICE CREAMS!!!
I got so excited and happy because they serve AUTHENTIC KOREAN ICE CREAMS!!! YUM YUM YUM
Chocolate Ice Cream Sandwich

Melon Ice Drop

saving the best for last—> VANILLA ICE CREAM SANDWICH WITH RED BEANs!!!

Raja Korean Restaurant in Tagaytay

We decided to have lunch at RAJA KOREAN RESTAURANT first before checking in at ONE TAGAYTAY PLACE.

The restaurant offers regular tables and low tables like the ones in Korea.
The place was awfully quiet for a lunch time.
There were no customers when we came in.
We were quite apprehensive in ordering most of the dishes because we do not know if the food here is okay or not.
So we decided to order just a couple, the safe ones:

For appetizers, we were given the following:
I like the beansprouts. Good thing I didn’t order the CHICKEN GIZZARDS because it was given to us as appies :) Yum!

BIMBIMBOP (Php 300)
Nothing still beats the Bimbimbop in CAFE MONACO!!!

KIMCHI CHIGE / Kimchi Soup (Php250)
It was okay  :)
A hot soup is always good during a cold weather.

Halfway through our meal, the chef decided to give us another treat (since we are the only customers in the restaurant)
It’s luncheon meat with carrots, pickled veggies and egg :)
It was really good.

Raja Korean Restaurant might be a busy place during dinner, but I’m not so sure about it.
Maybe I’ll come back next time to try their grilled meats.

The Best Fruity Halo Halo is in Cafe Monaco

If you’re looking for a real fruit halo-halo, then search no more!!!
Just go to CAFE MONACO in Banawe :D
and you’ll surely enjoy the BEST FRUITY HALO-HALO ever!

Cafe Monaco’s Halo Halo (Php 140) consisted of FRESH FRUITS topped with RED BEANS and Ice Cream.
To make it even yummier, just pour in the evaporated milk
photo grabbed from Kay Sy

Since one serving is huge, the fruity halo-halo is best shared with 2-3 friends :)
The apple, mango, banana, kiwi and pineapple were a great combination with the red beans.
However, I found the pineapple too overpowering.
Also, it would be perfect if the ice was finer :)
Anyhow, it’s still the best fruity halo-halo!!!
